How I Won Spring Break
a filthy little beach read
After I finished the first Cassie Snow series, I wanted to take a little break from baseball stories. It was still wintry and cold where I live, the time of year when many of my neighbors flee to warmer climates. We didn’t have a tropical vacation on our calendar, but I decided that I could take a beach vacation in my morning writing time, and so “How I Won Spring Break” was born.
My own spring breaks in college were certainly much tamer than Tiffany’s. Indeed, I remember only one actual trip — going to San Antonio for a literature conference (I know, totally insane and wild — another girl and I cleaned house in a “Jeopardy”-style trivia contest one night, and then used fake IDs to get beer on the river walk). Maybe if we had access to text messaging and phone cameras in those antediluvian days we would have inspired each other into competitive debauchery, but that seems unlikely.
“How I Won Spring Break” is a simple story: Tiffany is planning to have a debauched spring break with her friends, but her parents have other plans, insisting on one last family vacation before she goes to law school. Her friends encourage her, through dirty text messages, to pursue her debauchery anyway. The resort Tiffany’s mother has chosen is almost empty, though, and largely devoid of young people. Poor Tiffany has to get creative and daring to match her friends’ spring break antics.

What stands out to me about “How I Won Spring Break” is the particularly filthy beach scene after Tiffany’s visit to the resort’s night club. I wanted to really push the envelope in how dirty I could make a scene: most of the “Winning With the Wildcats” scenes were pretty vanilla, I thought, though certainly spicy. And I owe the inspiration for this scene to one of my favorite porn stars, Chloe Temple.
At the time I was working on “Spring Break,” I was also working on a more ambitious project: a steamy romance that takes place on a porn set. I haven’t quite abandoned that project — I’ve got about 13,000 words written, and I like a lot of them, particularly this teaser — but it’s very much on the back burner at the moment. Working on a romance on a porn set meant watching some porn, of course (oh the sacrifices we must make for art’s sake …), particularly the behind-the-scenes genre to get a feel for the off-camera interactions between performers and crew. That was how I stumbled on Ms. Temple and the scene that inspired Tiffany’s wild night on the beach.
Chloe Temple is one of my favorite female porn stars; she has a playful sparkle about her that makes her scenes fun to watch. She always looks like she’s having a good time, and she’s enthusiastic about trying new things. The new thing that Ms. Temple was trying, with Oliver Flynn (another of my favorites) and Tyler Steel (inexplicably dressed in “Where’s Waldo?” costumes) was double vaginal penetration.
I’ll just say up front that double vaginal penetration is a big “nope” for me personally. Though all three participants in this scene do appear to be having a good time, it requires a lot more effort and coordination to accomplish than I have the patience for. I’m perfectly happy to leave this kind of activity to the sexual athletes and paid professionals. But as an act to watch it’s certainly intriguing. I was pretty sure that I didn’t have a place for it in the story starring a fictionalized Chloe Temple, but I wanted to see if I could work it into something else.
Not that “How I Won Spring Break” is entirely a delivery vehicle for a double vaginal penetration scene (though it sort of is …). The other thing I wanted to do with this story was develop a highly competitive character and see where she was willing to let her competitive nature take her. While Cassie Snow is competitive, too, her motivations are more around teamwork. Tiffany is out to win, dammit, and she’ll do just about anything — even have incredibly unsatisfying sex with Lawn Care Boy — to come out on top. She’s a type who appears in a lot of my stories: Olive in The Pinball Queen’s Debauch, Dani in Beach Volleyball Bump, and Renee in Crossing Swords With the Fencing Club have similar personalities.
Will there ever be a sequel to “How I Won Spring Break”? Maybe? I liked Tiffany, she was fun to write, and her adventures were definitely hot. It’s my second best selling title, after Throuple, and there’s some appeal in writing another fun romp after the more angsty series I’m currently wrapping up. Maybe she can hook up with the snorkeling instructor again, though perhaps in a different setting? I imagine he might have a gig giving ski lessons, and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at a mountain resort tale like Roger Vadim’s version of Les liaisons dangereuses. Stay tuned, gentle reader, I’m having sexy thoughts again …
